Kyro Herbicide: The Triple Threat Postemergence Premix

Something went wrong. Please try again later...

In the war against weeds, corn farmers have a new tool from Corteva Agriscience, Kyro herbicide. The postemergence herbicide premix offers three modes of action (MOA) for unmatched grass and broadleaf weed control in corn up to 24” tall.

Recently, Groundwork spoke with Jeff Bode, Marketing Development Specialist, Corteva Agriscience, about Kyro and its prospects for improved weed control.

Q: What’s your “elevator pitch” on Kyro?

JB: Kyro is the first corn herbicide to combine the three proven active ingredients of acetochlor, clopyralid and topramezone as a single premix for both contact and residual control of more than 65 of the toughest broadleaf and grass weeds. It offers versatility with application in up to 24” corn, broad-spectrum weed control and excellent crop safety.

Q: What weeds does Kyro control?

JB: With three active ingredients, Kyro controls a lot of weeds!  Kyro provides excellent residual control of small-seeded broadleaves, including Palmer amaranth and waterhemp, as well as large-seeded broadleaf weeds such as giant ragweed.  With the addition of atrazine, Kyro provides industry-leading control of grasses, such as barnyardgrass, fall panicum and woolly cupgrass.

Q: Can Kyro be used in conventional corn?

JB: Yes. Conventional corn farmers are loving the efficacy Kyro brings to their fields, with postemergence contact and residual control. Kyro can also be used in popcorn, and in traited corn. Its crop safety gives it a lot of versatility.

Q: What are you telling farmers about tank-mixing with Kyro?

JB: Kyro is tank-mix-compatible with glyphosate, atrazine and other corn herbicides as well as insecticides, fungicides and micronutrients. And because Kyro does not contain atrazine or glyphosate, farmers can really customize their herbicide program to fit the unique needs of their fields. And for all the folks switching to PowerCore® Enlist® corn for even more herbicide tolerances (many of your readers), Kyro can be tank-mixed with Enlist One® herbicide. That’s a nice advantage.

Q: How does Kyro fit into a 2-pass herbicide program?

JB: In my humble opinion, it fits perfectly! Farmers can put down their preemergence corn herbicides, like Resicore® REV herbicide, FulTime® NXT herbicide and Keystone® NXT herbicide. And then come in with Kyro for their postemergence application. And don’t overlook the post-application window of up to 24” corn. We all know weather is difficult that time of year and corn grows quickly. So, application flexibility is key.

Q: Since Kyro entered the market a year ago, what kind of feedback are you getting?

JB: Product performance has been great. Farmers are happy. Like I mentioned earlier, Kyro is a great fit with conventional corn, traited corn, and then the Enlist® corn market that is growing immensely.

Q: What are the Corteva R&D “egg heads” working on next in weed control?

JB: We’re focused on bringing additional herbicide-tolerant systems in the long term and foliar products that complement those systems. The Enlist® weed control system is here now and it’s made huge difference for farmers. PowerCore Enlist corn has four herbicide tolerances. We’re also taking a close look at weeds that are becoming more resistant to current products. As things become resistant, it’s important to add additional MOA. While it’s tough to find new actives for weed pressures today, we’ve been improving our current applications. The biggest thing is focusing on multiple MOA to kill those weeds. We’re trying to make sure that the right products are in the tank.

Q: Any final comments?

JB: There are many different farms and weed pressures. Trying to get a good program together for each farm is important. We want to offer flexibility to help get a good program that each farmer can work with. At end of day, the assistance Kyro brings to them is the versatility of that wide spray window, broad-spectrum weed control and crop safety. I’d encourage folks to check it out for themselves.
