With soybean planting season arriving, have your customers locked in their weed control program approach?

“Unless your customers know of a lucrative market for weed seed, they’ll want to be implementing a program approach to control weeds,” says Ron Geis, market development specialist, Corteva Agriscience. “Retailers are in a great position to understand local growing conditions and offer herbicides that will fit into a successful weed control program.”

A program approach means starting clean with a burndown, using powerful preemergence herbicides with residual activity and then effective postemergence herbicides that also have residual activity. The program should incorporate herbicides that use multiple effective modes of action for more consistent control and sound resistance management.

Breaking Down the Program Approach

1.       Burndown: Geis recommends the use of Elevore® herbicide for an effective burndown. The low use rate of 1 ounce per acre makes Elevore an excellent fit in reduced and no-till systems for burndown application before planting. Elevore can be applied up to 14 days before planting soybeans for improved full-range broadleaf weed control.

2.       Preemergence: When it comes to selecting a preemergence herbicide, ensure the product can combat the problem weeds in your customers’ fields.

If your customers in northern Iowa are declaring war on waterhemp, use Kyber herbicide,” Geis says. This preemergence soybean herbicide boasts three effective modes of action and delivers the broad-spectrum control of resistant broadleaf and grass weeds that both retailers and farmers have been asking for.

“In areas where giant ragweed is more of a concern, I recommend starting with Sonic herbicide and spike in some EverpreX or Kyber for a powerful preemergence solution.”

3.       Postemergence: Corteva Agriscience offers a variety of strong and flexible postemergence soybean herbicide solutions to meet your customers’ needs, including:

·       DuPont EverpreX® herbicide — EverpreX offers farmers the flexibility of a wide application window. The solution can be applied up to 90 days before harvest. EverpreX provides residual control of ALS-, PPO- and glyphosate-resistant weeds like Palmer amaranth and waterhemp.

·       Enlist One® herbicide — Farmers who grow Enlist E3® soybeans can use Enlist One. The solution is a straight-goods 2,4-D choline that offers tank-mix flexibility and exceptional weed control designed to land and stay on target. Using Enlist One in a tank mix allows farmers to customize their program to match their weed spectrum.

·       Enlist Duo® herbicide — Farmers who grow Enlist E3 soybeans can use Enlist Duo herbicide. The solution is a convenient proprietary blend of 2,4-D choline and glyphosate that delivers strong weed control and helps prevent herbicide resistance.

Regardless of which chemistries your customers choose, applying multiple modes of action with residual activity is key. Keeping soybeans as clean as possible for as long as possible helps ensure maximum yield potential.

The Cost of Clean Fields

Geis recommends that growers spend 5% of their total crop value on a weed control program each year.

“It’s no secret that an integrated approach to weed control comes with a cost,” Geis says. “But you can’t raise a crop of weeds and a crop of soybeans in the same field at the same time — something has to give.”
