A sharpened focus on improving nitrogen-use efficiency in recent years has paved the way for improved nitrogen management practices. Some trends include shifting to split and/or in-season applications, using nitrogen stabilizers and, most recently, using nitrogen-fixing biological products. All these practices can contribute to greater nitrogen-use efficiency and often provide both economic and environmental benefits.
However, there are many variables that contribute to nitrogen-use efficiency, which means every field or operation may require different solutions. To better serve your customers, it’s important to stay up to speed on the latest nitrogen management trends.
“Staying on top of the latest nitrogen management tools and trends allows retailers to bring valuable insights to their growers in an ever-changing market,” says Ty Stender, Nutrient Maximizer strategic account manager, Corteva Agriscience. “Each year, agronomy practices, products and economics are changing. Keeping up with those trends and practices keeps you relevant with your customers.”
Here are three ways you can keep a pulse on the latest products and practices used to improve nutrient management:
Find trusted sources and subscribe to content.
“I utilize a combination of email subscriptions, ag publications, university websites, social media, podcasts and, most importantly, visits with my colleagues,” Stender says.
Here are some resources to subscribe to, if you haven’t already:

Stender says that another great way to stay in the know is to attend ag trade shows, events hosted by your local university extension program and industry conventions.

Test new products.
Farming has many variables and there is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why it’s advised to test new products before offering them to your customers.
“Testing can help you make decisions on what products to offer your customers,” Stender says. “Testing products also gives you insights as to how the product will perform across many different locations and conditions — allowing you to place that product on farms where it will perform best.”
Nutrient management best practices are improving at a rapid pace, making for a challenging but exciting time to be in crop production. As we head into the 2023 growing season, Stender’s No. 1 piece of advice for retailers is to stay updated on the trends and stay close to your customers.
