Mississippi high school senior Kyle Voong’s promotion of National Rice Month with a musical rap video has earned him a $4,000 college scholarship from Corteva Agriscience and the USA Rice Federation.

“The consistent presence of music within my life motivated me to create a rap song for National Rice Month,” Voong says. “No matter how my day is going, a song, whether it be rap, K-pop or indie music, can always brighten my mood.”

Voong attends Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi. His winning video, titled, A Sup-Rice-Ing Presentation, was chosen from a field of 62 entries and is a fun musical composition educating consumers about rice. The video, chosen as this year’s winner by USA Rice, highlights the culinary use, nutrition and economic impact of rice in Mississippi.

“I absolutely love the process of storyboarding a video and making my plans come into fruition, so editing, filming and planning were all a joy for me,” Voong says. “Additionally, the subject of U.S.-grown rice intrigued me because I was familiar with rice, but still had much to learn. I saw this video contest as an opportunity to test both my research abilities and my video production abilities.”

Voong, winner of the 2019 scholarship sponsored by Corteva Agriscience, receives a $4,000 college scholarship and a trip for two to the awards ceremony at the 2019 USA Rice Outlook Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. Watch his video here

Taking second place in the 2019 National Rice Month video scholarship contest was Alexander Liago, with his video, The Impact of Texas Rice. This year’s third place winner is Breahna Sommers, with her video, The Importance of Louisiana Rice
