Targeting grasses with an early postemergence application of Clincher® SF herbicide in your rice field improves control, capitalizes on early spring rains and broadens your tank-mix options.
While Clincher offers the flexibility to treat weeds from the one- to two-leaf stage of rice up to 60 days before harvest, early postemergence timing offers three important benefits, says Jeremy Frankenberger, Corteva Agriscience territory manager in northeastern Arkansas.
Superior Weed Control for Rice
“An early postemergence spray of Clincher allows you to get an early head start on these hard-to-kill grasses when they are young and small and are easier to control," Frankenberger says. "This is especially true when you are battling barnyardgrass and sprangletop.”
Clincher controls a wide spectrum of annual and seedling perennial grasses in rice, including barnyardgrass (including ALS-, propanil- and quinclorac-resistant species), sprangletop, knotgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, fall panicum and junglerice.
Early postemergence weed control treatments are typically applied to two- to three-leaf rice, Frankenberger says.
Capture Rainfall Benefits
Early spring in the Mid-South is often marked by heavy rainfall. That may make timely planting challenging; however, it is a benefit when it comes to weed control.
An early postemergence herbicide treatment allows growers to take advantage of adequate soil moisture, especially with early season rice.
“The wet conditions we’ve had the last few years are prime conditions for herbicide activation, and Clincher performs well in muddy conditions,” Frankenberger says.
Manage Resistance Development
An early postemergence timing also allows growers to tank-mix Clincher® SF herbicide with residual herbicides, deploying multiple modes of action in a season-long weed control program.
“Clincher takes out the grass that’s emerged and allows the added residual to beat back any grasses that could emerge later,” Frankenberger says. “Tank-mixing with an overlapping residual such as clomazone or pendimethalin helps eliminate post grass management issues, minimizes any potential resistance development and lengths the time between sprays.”
