Many farmers think they only need to stabilize nitrogen applications in the fall. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Nitrogen continues to be a high input cost; and with variable weather conditions throughout the spring and summer, it’s important to stabilize every application to protect that investment.
Using a proven nitrogen stabilizer can help protect and keep nitrogen in the soil longer. This is especially critical when soil temperatures are rising in the spring and if you’re experiencing either drought or wet weather conditions.
“As I visit with folks around the Midwest this year, there are pockets of really wet areas across southern Illinois and southern Indiana.” says Chris Kluemke, Corteva Agriscience nitrogen stabilizer market development specialist. “For instance, southern Illinois recently saw more than 5 inches of rain, so any nitrogen in the nitrate form was at risk for loss. Using a proven stabilizer can help keep nitrogen in the ammonium form longer to help reduce leaching caused from heavy rainfall.”
Kluemke says unpredictable weather is just one reason farmers should stabilize their nitrogen no matter the application timing. He emphasizes there is just as much return on investment potential with spring or sidedress stabilization as there is with fall applications.
