Helping Your Customers With Cover Crop Burndown

TIPS AND OPTIONS FOR 2025

This spring, as your customers prepare for cover crop burndown, Corteva Agriscience is introducing two new options for a clean start to the soybean season: Sonic® Boom herbicide and Kyber® Pro herbicide.

Both of these products offer specific preseason advantages. Before choosing a herbicide program for burndown, however, your customers will first want to evaluate both weeds and weather.

Consider weed density and species

With different cover crops come changes in both weed type and density. A good cover crop stand will better suppress weeds like waterhemp and Palmer amaranth, while a thin cover crop may allow for more weed growth. Your customers should scout for weeds before application and design a program around known actions against their most problematic weeds, especially if they’ve experienced any weed resistance.

Factor in weather for better results

Weather is an especially big challenge during termination of cover crops. Farmers should assess crop stands early and be mindful of weather conditions at application time. Herbicides should be applied with temperatures in the mid-50s and climbing. Spraying earlier in the day, rather than mid-to-late afternoon when temps fall, is a good practice in the springtime. Cooler weather negatively affects herbicide efficacy because weeds need to be actively growing to take up the herbicide. Jason Gibson, Market Development Specialist, Corteva Agriscience, says, “Under the wrong conditions, the herbicide rate can be doubled without realizing any difference in control.”

Sonic® Boom herbicide

As farmers weigh options and timing for burndown, Corteva has two new products they can consider for their programs in 2025:

CONTROL

  • Preemergence soybean herbicide with two proven modes of action and long-lasting residual.
  • Two active ingredients — metribuzin and sulfentrazone — provide residual control of some of the toughest broadleaf weeds common to soybeans today, including suppression of many problematic grasses.
  • Combats glyphosate- and ALS- resistant weeds including waterhemp,  Palmer amaranth and kochia.

CONVENIENCE

  • Easy-to-use liquid formulation and tank-mix flexibility with glyphosate, 2,4-D and other soybean herbicides such as Group 15 herbicides.
  • Versatile application timing for use in either preemergence, preplant or fall burndown.
  • Long residual of 4–6 weeks for wider application window in postemergence application.

FLEXIBLE FEATURES

  • Fits a wide range of agronomic needs and geographies.
  • Foundational for preemergence applications, fits well with a twopass program for season-long weed control.
  • Compatible with the Enlist® weed control system.

Kyber® Pro herbicide

CONTROL

  • Provides an option for broadspectrum control of resistant broadleaf and grass weeds in soybeans for a tough burndown  of cover crops.
  • Three proven modes of action — metribuzin (Group 5), flumioxazin (Group 14) and pyroxasulfone (Group 15)
  • Controls more than 50 broadleaf and grass weeds, including difficult ALS- and PPO-resistant weeds like common ragweed and Palmer amaranth.
  • Effective for burndown and residual control of small-seeded broadleaves and winter annual weeds.

CONVENIENCE

  • Helps deliver long-lasting residual activity to fight tough, resistant weeds like waterhemp, Palmer amaranth and common ragweed, widening the postemergence application window.
  • Strong residual control delivers protection against weeds for up to six weeks; control may last longer in the right conditions.

FLEXIBLE FEATURES

  • Easy-to-handle liquid premix stays in solution for long periods, no matter the temperature.
  • Excellent mixing, handling and storage.
  • Can be tank-mixed with other burndown herbicides, including glufosinate, glyphosate and/or 2,4-D for broader burndown efficacy.

Sonic® Boom herbicide and Kyber® Pro herbicide can contribute to a successful, clean start to the soybean season by offering convenience, extensive control of broadleaf and grass weeds and multiple proven modes of action.
