Controlling brush this summer can help increase forage quality and quantity. Read about our recommended products and application methods to rid pastures of troublesome brush species.

Brush encroachment in pastures and hayfields can decrease the nutritional value of pastures, forage availability and stocking rates. Removing scattered brush in pastures and along fence lines will pay off in the long run. And summer is the best time to do so; when leaves are fully leafed out and growing conditions are favorable.

APPLICATION METHODS

It’s typically easier to control smaller brush stands before they become taller and their root systems become more entrenched. In pastures with less than 150 plants per acre, high-volume foliar (leaf-spray) applications can quickly and effectively control encroaching brush.

For moderate-to-dense infestations, we recommend broadcast applications. These applications are ideal for treating large, open areas where target weed or brush species are scattered throughout. Depending on the product and height of the target brush, broadcast applications can be made by ground or by air.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS WITH DURACOR

For simple, broad-spectrum brush control, we recommend Remedy® Ultra herbicide. For mixed stands of species, such as honeylocust, hedge (bois d’arc, Osage orange) and multiflora rose, or where broadleaf weeds also are present, tank-mix DuraCor® herbicide with Remedy Ultra. This broad-spectrum brush and broadleaf combo is ideal for protecting valuable fences, stopping encroachment from pasture perimeters and cleaning up scattered patches across grazing acres.

For mixed species stands where nonresidual control is desired, we recommend using PastureGard® HL herbicide.
