Spotted spurge

Spurge is a summer annual that thrives in warm, disturbed areas. Once it appears, it can quickly become any professional’s biggest enemy because of its fast-spreading and low-growing resilience.

How to Spot Spurge

The following varieties of spurge can be spotted in the heat of summer along or in sidewalk cracks, in landscape and ornamental beds or nursery containers, and will root almost anywhere.

Spotted Spurge

  • Red- or purple-tinged stems with opposite, oblong leaves that are smooth or sparsely hairy and vary from reddish-green to dark green in color, often with a maroon or purple spot in the center.

Creeping Spurge

  • Leaves are oval-shaped, oblong and hairless. Unlike spotted spurge, the leaves do not have distinct markings or spots.

Petty Spurge

  • It has green flowers in three-rayed umbels with kidney-shaped glands and long, thin horns.

How to Control Spurge

  • Preemergence herbicides
GameOn® specialty herbicide delivers exceptional fast-acting postemergence control. It can provide visible results within 24 to 72 hours and breaks down quickly in soil. Plus, it can control more than 100 different types of weeds, including spotted spurge.

Snapshot® specialty herbicide delivers unmatched effectiveness when controlling creeping spurge by disrupting weed seed development as seeds germinate; seedlings gradually die before even breaking the soil surface.

Gallery® specialty herbicide provides superior preemergence broadleaf weed control, effective on more than 90 broadleaf weeds, including petty spurge.

  • Follow the label
